    BMC (Mumbai)

In 1871, the Scientific American magazine published a report on the fountain of Mumbai, the largest of its kind in India. It was constructed in 1864 by the Agri-Horticultural Society of India. It was called the Flora Fountain after the Roman goddess, a statue of whom was placed at the top. Ten years ago, the water jets were working intermittently, and the Flora Fountain was condemned to the same fate as many other structures dating from the colonial era of Mumbai: beautiful but difficult to maintain. A few months ago, the Flora Fountain was working again. The restoration architect, Vikas Dilawari, was appointed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to give new life to the fountain. The work lasted two and a half years. At the time of its original construction, several cast iron lamp posts located around the fountain. Fortunately, they are all conserved and Neri ‘light 850’ was mounted on them.
